What the league is for
Drafts, caps, and trade limits exist so teams meet as near-equals. The point is to measure who is better when the test stays hard — not who piled the most points or collected the most banners.
If you make the test easier on purpose (stack two primes, cook free agency, park every closer on one roster), the result is a different kind of result. You do not get to cash it as the same achievement. Judge a player against the best resistance in his year, under his rules. Cross-era fantasy arguments are a category error.
This is: a proving ground. This is not: a stat dump, a ring counter, or a prize for recruiting.
Why the league is built that way
If excellence is the thing being measured, you do not get to soften the exam and keep the same grade. Caps exist so that dodge is illegal. Do it anyway and the credit drops. That is the whole argument.
The bars
Did he carry it. Was the team on him. Two primes split the grade.
How hard was it. Who did he have to beat. Empty bracket is not the same win.
Did he need help. Built in-house is fine. Importing a second star to finish it is not.
Best in his time. Against his own field. Not “would he cook 1962.” Career board only.
Won it himself. The banner did not need a second star.
His prime. Best stretch on the career board. In a season view it is that year’s hammer — twilight years get cut.
How long. Years he was the guy. Career board only.

Pick one year or add several. Era and How long go gray and drop out of the math. You are already inside a year. A calendar cannot pay “how long he stayed the guy.”
A year is the whole campaign. Regular season is who held the bag and how the roster was built. Playoffs are the wall. Seed without a series is not resistance. A banner without the regular-season burden is still tested for who they imported.
Default with several years: one name, his best year in the set. 2011 Dirk and 2006 Dirk do not average. 2016 Dirk cannot drag 2011 down.
Switch on “Show each season as its own row” and the same man can appear twice — 2010/11 Dirk next to 2006/07 Dirk. That is a ranking of years, not of careers. Leave it off for a clean player list.
